Is Canva Becoming a Shortcut to Complex Animated Explainer Videos?
The answer might be yes—with the right approach. While After Effects is the industry standard for high-end motion graphics, Canva is proving to be a powerful tool for streamlining animated content. In this project, I combined both platforms to create a dynamic, engaging motion design animation that balances quality and efficiency.
Background:
This project was an in-house collaboration between EcoVadis' Philanthropy Task Force and the Internal Communication Team, highlighting the company’s philanthropic initiatives in 2024. The task force, composed of members from various departments, organized these activities, while I worked closely with Maria and Stefano during the animation phase. They provided the script, content, and voice-over, which was narrated by EcoVadis employees, reinforcing the authenticity and community-driven nature of the project.
Creative Process & Tools:
The animation opens with a high-end, cinematic sequence crafted in After Effects, setting a polished and engaging tone. However, to optimize efficiency, I transitioned to Canva for the majority of the animation—a decision encouraged by Ainsleigh, our Internal Communication Team Lead.
While After Effects allowed for complex motion graphics in the first 15 seconds, Canva played a crucial role in simplifying the production process. By leveraging its animated text, photo grids, and motion effects, I maintained a consistent design style while significantly reducing production time.
Key Takeaways:
- Hybrid Workflow: Combining After Effects for high-end animation and Canva for structured motion design created a balance between quality and efficiency.
- Collaboration: This project highlights the power of cross-departmental teamwork, using internal voices to craft an authentic story.
- Scalability: Canva offers a scalable solution for internal communication videos, making motion design more accessible without requiring advanced skills.
